Cuito - Sixteen people have died of rabies in the province of Bié, from January to the present date, out of a total of 1,923 victims bites from pets suspected of having the disease.
The figures were presented by the provincial director of Agriculture in Bié, Felizardo Brito Capepula, at the opening of the provincial pet vaccination campaign, held in the commune of Cunje, seven kilometers north of the Biennial capital.
In 2023, the province of Bié reported two thousand 369 cases of dog bites, with 27 deaths.
To counter the cases, local authorities started a campaign across the province today, in which they plan to vaccinate, for 10 days, more than 120 thousand animals, including dogs, cats and monkeys. An equal number of doses of rabies vaccines are available.
More than 40 technicians are involved, including supervisors and veterinarians.
Felizardo Brito Capepula appealed to animal breeders to take greater responsibility in the care, build a cage or chain the animal, in order to avoid bites, which can result in deaths.
This campaign takes place under the motto: 'vaccinated animal, protected human'. BAN/PLB/DOJ
