Luena - One thousand and 430 cases of stroke were admitted to the Eastern Regional Centre for Physical Rehabilitation, based in the city of Luena, Moxico province, in 2023, the director of the hospital unit, Nilton Amaral Baio, said on Monday.
Speaking to ANGOP, he said that of the 23,669 patients from Moxico, Lunda Sul, Lunda Norte and Bié provinces admitted to the unit during this period, 1,430 had stroke sequelae, 88 more than in 2022, affecting teenagers, young people and the elderly.
In addition to strokes, 638 patients had muscle problems, while 641 were diagnosed with facial paralysis, including 10 children aged between five and seven, according to the official.
Regarding physiotherapy, 927 patients had problems with joint limitations, and 609 people with clubfoot are receiving treatment.
In the area of orthopedics, he said, there has been a significant reduction in the manufacture of prostheses, down from 61 in 2022 to 36.
He also said that the shortage of raw materials for the manufacture of this material (prostheses) has created several difficulties for the center, given the high number of patients requesting the material.
In April 2019, the Eastern Regional Centre for Physical Rehabilitation, reopened with services of orthopedic and physiotherapy, as well as psychotherapy.
Founded in 1997 by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Vietnam War Veterans Foundation (VVAF), the center was transferred to the Ministry of Health (MINSA) in 2005. TC/YD/DAN/DOJ
