Malanje – At least 64 cases of measles were registered in the first half of this year in northern Malanje, representing a huge reduction compared to prior 2,000 recorded in the same period in 2023, the supervisor of the Program to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (DTN) Guilherme Santos told ANGOP on Saturday.
The health official stressed that preventive measures, such as vaccination campaigns, are the basis for the reduction in the number of cases and that the province has recorded 192 cases of scabies, representing a reduction of 1,808 compared to the same period last year.
He pointed to a lack of hygiene as one of the main factors in the spread of the disease, and appealed to families, especially in rural areas, to pay attention to this aspect.
Measles is a serious infectious disease, caused by a virus, and can be fatal. It is spread by a virus that settles in the mucous membrane of the nose and can reach the bloodstream.
Fever accompanied by a cough, eye irritation, a runny or blocked nose, lack of appetite and intense malaise are the main symptoms and it can be transmitted between four days before or after the appearance of red spots on the body, through contact with an infected person.
Scabies, which is also a skin infection caused by a microscopic parasitic mite called Sarcoptes scabiei, causes bumps and intense itching and can be transmitted through direct contact with infected people. NC/PBC/AMP
