Luanda – More than 2,000 patients who are on the waiting lists for surgery, as of Tuesday will start being assisted in the provinces of Luanda and Bié, as part of a massive surgical campaign promoted by the Ministry of Health.
The secretary of State for Hospital Affairs, Leonardo Inocêncio, while speaking at the press conference, said that massive surgical campaign will last for a month. Hernias, for all ages, obstetric fistulas and uterine fibroids, cleft lip and palate repair, hydrocephalus, closure of Ileostomy or colostomy, (for all ages), are the pathologies to be treated.
The Health Ministry official noted that approximately 200 doctors are involved in this massive campaign.
In the specific case of Bié Province, Leonardo Inocêncio said that only surgeries on cleft lips and palate would be carried out at the Dr. Walter Strangway Hospital.
At the Luanda Paediatric Hospital, he said, surgery would be carried out on paediatric hernias and the closure of ileostomies or colostomies. The patients with cataracts and hernias will be operated at the Luanda General Hospital, whilst the Américo Boavida Hospital will perform surgery on people with urological problems.
Leonardo Inocêncio explained that Cardinal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Cardiovascular Disease Hospital Complex will operate children with hydrocephalus problems, a pathology previously treated only by Luanda Paediatrics and the Hydrocephalus Hospital, located in the Benfica neighbourhood.
The obstetric fistulas and uterine fibroids patients will undergo surgery in the Lucrécia Paim Maternity Hospital, as well as the Dr. Azancot de Menezes Maternal and Child Hospital.
According to the official, the aim of the massive surgery campaign is to reduce the number of patients on waiting lists, and this is only the first phase, as the second phase will cover the provinces of Cabinda and Huila.
