Mbanza Kongo - Health authorities in the municipality of Mbanza Kongo, Zaire province, have reinforced, in recent days, epidemiological surveillance measures on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), due to the emergence in Luanda of the first case of Monkeypox.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, the director of the provincial health office, João Bernardo, said that despite the extensive land and river border that Zaire shares with the Central Congo (DRC) region, no suspected cases of this disease have yet been registered at the main border posts with this neighboring country.
He informed that the epidemiological surveillance teams deployed at the border posts of Luvo (Mbanza Kongo), Nóqui, Kimbumba (Soyo), Buela and Minga, in the municipality of Cuimba, were reinforced.
'They are rapid response teams and are ready for any eventuality along the border, as far as Monkeypox disease is concerned,' he said.
According to the official, in case of suspicion of this disease at the main border posts with the DRC, the population should inform the health authorities deployed in these locations.
He said that an emergency medical center had been created in the communal headquarters of Luvo, municipality of Mbanza Kongo, to receive any suspected cases of this pathology also known as Mpox.
Four municipalities in the province of Zaire share a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), namely Mbanza Kongo, Soyo, Cuimba and Nóqui, over a length of 310 km. JL/DOJ
