Angola records more than a hundred cases of cholera in 24 hours

Luanda – At least 178 cases of cholera have been recorded, in the last 24 hours, in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Huambo and Icolo and Bengo.

 According to the Ministry of Health's daily bulletin, with this number, the total number of cholera cases recorded in Angola rose to 1,888, specifically in the provinces of Luanda, with 1,062, Bengo (530), Ícolo and Bengo (280), Huambo (five), Malanje (four), Zaire (four), Huíla (two) and Cuanza-Norte (one).

The disease affected 994 men and 894 women, with ages ranging from two to one hundred years.

The cases in the last 24 hours were recorded in the provinces of Bengo (108), Luanda (56), Icolo and Bengo (13) and Huambo (1), at a time when 245 people with cholera symptoms are hospitalized in the country.

 During this period, six deaths were recorded, four in the province of Bengo, one (1) in Luanda and another in Ícolo and Bengo.

 Since the first week of January, Angola has recorded 65 deaths in the provinces of Luanda (38), Bengo (19) and Ícolo and Bengo (eight).

 The most affected age group is from two to five years of age, with 294 cases and 10 deaths, followed by 10 to 14 years of age, with 250 cases and 5 deaths.

 As part of preventing and combating the disease, 930,532 people from the provinces of Luanda, Bengo and Icolo and Bengo were vaccinated against cholera.

The campaign, which is scheduled to end Tuesday, February 4, was launched in the municipality of Cacuaco, the epicentre of the outbreak, by the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, and aims to vaccinate 80% of the population, starting of one year of age, with a single dose of the Eurovisol oral vaccine.

 The vaccination is carried out at fixed stations, namely in health units, high-performance vaccination stations, schools, stores, markets, as well as with the use of mobile equipment in difficult-to-access areas. OHA/MRA/DOJ
