Luanda - The Vice-President of Angola , Esperança da Costa, visited the Nurek Hydroelectric Dam in Tajikistan Monday, the largest in Central Asia, generating 10 - 11 billion megawatts (KWh) of electricity annually.
On the occasion, the Vice-President received information about the energy infrastructure, which has a production capacity of 3,000 megawatts and is currently undergoing a modernization process.
The dam is located 100 kilometres from the capital Dushanbe and was built in 1961. It is currently being modernized to reach 3375MW of energy, 375 more than current production.
Esperança da Costa is in the Central Asian country to take part, on behalf of the President of the Republic, in the 3rd High Level International Conference on the International Decade of Action ‘Water for Sustainable Development’ 2018-2028.
The Vice-President is expected to address the conference on Tuesday.
The meeting in Dushanbe, which began today, will unfold in three main stages. The first includes thematic forums by region: ‘African Water Forum’, ‘Glacier Forum’ and ‘Central Asian Water Forum’, as well as a Forum on Science and Technology and the private sector.
The second day is reserved for the opening of the Plenary Session, which will be dominated by themes such as ‘Water for Health: Access to Hygiene, including the Human Rights to Drinking Water and Sanitation’ and ‘Water for Sustainable Development: Valuing Water, the Water-Energy-Food Nexus and Sustainable Economic and Urban Development’.
The third day is reserved for addressing ‘Water for climate, resilience and the environment: source to the sea, biodiversity, climate, resilience and disaster risk reduction (DRR)’ and ‘Water for cooperation: transboundary and international water cooperation, intersectoral cooperation, including science and water cooperation, across the 2030 Agenda’.
The theme ‘Decade of action on water: accelerating the implementation of the decade's objectives, in particular through the UN Secretary-General's Plan of Action’ closes the plenary session, attended by heads of state and government, civil society and the private sector.FMA/ART/DAN/AMP
