Luanda – Angola’s Vice-President of the Republic Esperança da Costa on Wednesday highlighted the role of women in promoting development in Africa, during a joint meeting held in Luanda with the former president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the UN envoy, Bintou Keita, and the African Union envoy, Bineta Diop.
At the end of meeting, the former Liberian president told the press that during the conversation, they discussed the main challenges on gender and the strategy for strengthening the African women's network, an organization of which she is patron.
On her turn, Bineta Diop, special envoy of the African Union for Women, Peace and Security to the United Nations, said it was important for women to adopt role models that contribute to silencing guns on the continent.
She defended the existence of female leaders who better represent society and who work for peace, security, economic development and trade, referring that Angola is one of the best examples on the continent.
Bineta Diop also defended the promotion of a positive masculinity that contributes to the successful implementation of the African Union's Agenda 2063.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Bineta Diop and Bintou Keita are in Angola as speakers to first International Women's Forum for Peace and Democracy taking place this Thursday and Friday in Luanda.
Under the motto “Technological innovation as a tool for achieving food security and fighting drought on the African continent”, the event aims to reaffirm the political commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
The forum plans to highlight, among others, the role that President João Lourenço has played in promoting peace and reconciliation in Africa.
