Luanda - The Vice-President of Angola Esperança da Costa, on Friday instructed children to preserve the environment, as it plays a fundamental role in the lives of human beings.
This took place after a visit by schoolchildren to the Support Office of the Vice-President of the Republic, as part of the month of June dedicated to children.
Esperança da Costa, who interacted with the children, cited some of the consequences of climate change, which is causing food insecurity, social conflicts, loss of life and forced population displacement.
According to the Vice-President, climate change threatens ecosystems and weakens the fulfillment of fundamental rights.
The Vice-President taught children about the changes the environment has undergone and the global challenges to reverse the situation, having highlighted the way in which the government has developed environmental programs and promoted children's rights and duties, so that they don't lack water, quality education and a healthy environment.
On the occasion, the Minister of Education, Luísa Grilo, said that all primary and secondary school subjects include content on environmental issues to teach children about the importance of the environment.
The minister said the sector is working with UNESCO on a tree planting program to preserve the environment and selective waste collection in 55 schools.
The Presidential Decree No. 149/22 introduces a new National Environmental Education Strategy in Angola, which should be implemented by 2050 and proposes targets to be met in terms of basic sanitation or the use of plastics, which are normally associated with other types of public policy.
It outlines the main objectives of this strategy to strengthen the mechanisms for dialogue in society, establish consensus on joint measures and actions, create an environment for producing values and changing behavior, broaden the knowledge base on sustainability and environmental protection and encourage the permanent participation of citizens and society in environmental education programs in the short, medium and long term.
The three axes of the strategy revolve around the concepts of environmental citizenship, conscious and sustainable consumption and environmental sanitation. FMA/ART/TED/AMP
