Luanda - The president of UNITA, the country’s largest opposition party, Adalberto Costa Júnior, considered Wednesday that the crime situation in Angola has been taking “alarming" proportion, with the authorities almost having it out of control.
The politician understands that, no matter how many statements some government officials or the National Police make to minimize the situation, the reality is that "we are facing a significant increase in all types of crimes".
Speaking to the press, regarding "Political Violence and the State of Crime in Angola", Adalberto Costa Júnior said there is a new model of "ordered" political crimes with no apparent concern on the part of institutions to determine responsibilities.
"Crime in Angola is reaching unacceptable levels and risks escaping the control of the authorities, to the point where no sane citizen can feel safe at home, on the streets, in various public areas and even in the workplace", he warned.
He highlighted that, possibly, political actors recognize that there is a program to eliminate voices against the regime and another from the ruling party that accepts “partisan islands”, hampering the exercise of plurality.
The president of UNITA is of the opinion that some of this crime is the direct responsibility of those who govern and that it also results from practices and programs that must be quickly changed.
He also listed the high poverty rates, high number of unemployed people and theoretically the lack of reform programs in certain sectors, such as Public Administration and Justice, as elements contributing to delinquency increase.
"We have a country in which impunity prevails, in which justice is only served to the lowest strata of our population and globally subject to political obedience and corruption", described the UNITA leader.
However, Adalberto Costa Júnior reported that, from all over the national territory, UNITA receives terrifying reports of armed robberies, homicides, robberies, rapes, thefts, bodily harm and accusations of witchcraft with the deaths of the accused.
In Lunda-Norte and Lunda-Sul provinces, he cited as an example, alleged members of the defense and security forces and private security companies, as well as criminals "kill citizens in broad daylight simply because they are clandestine miners".
"In Huila, criminals operate in broad daylight in informal markets; in Benguela, robberies have become frightening and domestic violence is taking root (...)", he stressed, also showing concern about the frequent thefts of motorbikes and cold murders in motorcycle taxi activity.
Regarding the city of Luanda, bandits have decreed a “mandatory curfew” in several neighborhoods, under the condescending gaze of the authorities.
Among other matters, Adalberto Costa Júnior also referred to the aforementioned growing sophistication of organized and white-collar crime, evidence of drug trafficking associated with international networks, and other evil actions linked to this shady business.
"Examples of these crimes include the recent attack on a caravan of UNITA deputies in Cuando-Cubango, the attack on deputy Carlos Xavier in Malanje”, pointing out alternation as a solution.
