African Union calls for joint effort to peace in DRC

Luanda - The Head of State of Comoros and acting president of the African Union (AU) Azali Assoumani Tuesday in Luanda called for joint efforts to address the situation in the DRC in order to avoid negative repercussions on other countries in the region.

Azali Assoumani made the call while delivering his speech  at the Summit of Heads of States and Governments of the political and economic regions of Africa.

Addressing the event, aimed to coordinate efforts to ensure peace In the African continent, in particular the eastern region of the DRC, the Statesman asked for the need to step up cooperation in favour of the DRC.

He also spoke of the need to adopt effective political solutions necessary, to avoid duplication of efforts and competition between regional mechanisms.

In his speech, he suggested the creation of a coordination group composed of representatives of the AU, regional communities and the UN, within the framework of the pacification of the east of the DRC,

In turn, the president of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, defended engagement in the search for African solutions to the continent's problems.

He endorsed the need to coordinate efforts for the efficiency and wise management of that country's resources within the framework of engagements for the establishment of peace, through close and harmonious cooperation among the regional blocs.

Moussa Faki condemned the killing of civilians on the Uganda-DRC border.

He called for vigorous action to combat violations of international human and humanitarian rights.

The inter-regional meeting is among the deliberations of the 11th extraordinary summit of heads of state of the ICGLR held on March 3 in Luanda under the initiative of the Angolan president, Joao Lourenço.

The Summit is attended by Presidents Ali Bongo of Gabon, Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, Félix Tshisekedi of DRC, Faustin-Archange Touadéra of Central African Republic and Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe.

President of the Union of the Comoros and incumbent head of the African Union Azali Assoumani, Head of State of Zimbabwe and incumbent head of the African Union Peace and Security Council Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Gabon, and incumbent head of the ECCAS Ali Bongo are all taking part in the quadripartite meeting.

Also present are the President of Burundi and EAC Evarist Ndayishimiye, the Head of State of the Democratic Republic of Congo and SADC acting chairperson Félix Tshisekedi, the former President of Kenya and designated EAC facilitator Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.

Also the Vice President of Namibia Nangolo Mbumba, Foreign Minister of Rwanda Vincent Biruta, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahammat, Ambassador Parfait Onanga, representative of the UN Secretary General, as well as the Chairperson of the ECCAS Commission and the Executive Secretaries of ICGLR, SADC and CAO.
