Luanda - The European Union (EU) will invest 25 million euros in new projects to modernize Angola’s justice sector, Ambassador Rosário Bento Pais announced Monday in Luanda.
The diplomat made this revelation while speaking at the working meeting with senior members of the Supreme Court (TS), which served to address the 'Reform of justice and law', 'The impact of the PRO-REACT program on the courts', 'The challenges on the fight against corruption, money laundering and asset recovery', 'The digitalization of the courts, as well as 'The program to support the judicial system'.
Rosário Bento Pais also said that, with this amount, there will be a 'great' opportunity to expand the support that has been provided for the continuity of the European Union's regional project, called CAF, as well as PRO-REACT.
During the meeting, the Ambassador also praised the role of the TS in coordinating and cooperating with the PRO-REACT project, which has had satisfactory results, 'although the financial resources were not enormous compared to the ongoing plan'.
Regarding the areas, Rosário Pais indicated that actions to improve the performance and professionalism of the rule of law, strengthen the fight against organized crime, with emphasis on money laundering, the fight against corruption and asset recovery, promotion of institutions and transparency, should be reinforced.
On the other hand, she continued, the improvement of electronic justice, data protection, the right to privacy and cybersecurity.
For his part, the President of the Supreme Court, Joel Leonardo, underlined the support provided by the EU to improve the quality of national justice services.
In this regard, Joel Leonardo expressed the desire to continue, bearing in mind that 'we are dealing with new normative realities such as the recovery of assets, money laundering and the reform of justice and law in Angola.
For the president of the Supreme Court, the digitalization of cases in the courts is urgent and unavoidable, and for this it is necessary to invest in the training of technicians in order to effectively put artificial intelligence at the service of the courts.
Joel Leonardo also pointed out the modernization of the judicial system, investment in training to raise the technical level of magistrates and bailiffs, as some of the areas they intend to strengthen. MGM/SC/DOJ
