Luanda - The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, on Thursday considered the collective security system to be threatened by geopolitical divisions with the multiplication of conflicts in the Great Lakes region, the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan.
The head of Angolan diplomacy, who was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 79th anniversary of the United Nations, stressed that the UN Security Council is outdated and its authority is being eroded because of the ineffectiveness of the decision-making process led by its members.
“If its composition and working methods are not reformed, this important body in the structure of the only universal organization will end up losing all its credibility,” the minister said.
Téte António said that the situation prevailing in Sudan, where a violent war is raging with humanitarian consequences of dramatic proportions, is worrying, given the apathy of the international community, which must seek to converge its efforts and act in coordination with the African Union in the quest for a lasting peace.
The minister added that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seriously and profoundly shaken stability and security in Europe, with strong repercussions for the rest of the world in terms of economic stability, as well as food and energy security.
The Angolan minister pointed out that there has been a continuous upsurge in this conflict, which has been escalating in a disturbing way, with devastating effects on the internal situation of the contending countries, through the use of increasingly lethal weaponry, without any prospect of a solution to this intricate problem.
As regards to the Middle East conflict, the minister lamented the fact that the main victims are defenseless and vulnerable human beings, such as children, women, the elderly and the sick.
The minister said the victims are being killed indiscriminately, not only by aviation and artillery bombs, but also because they are prevented by the force of arms from access to their basic rights, such as food, drinking water, housing and medical care, the destruction of school, hospital, housing, energy and other infrastructures.
Téte António also referred to the death, in alarming numbers, of journalists from international media, United Nations officials and workers from international humanitarian organizations, an unacceptable and reprehensible act.
“We are concerned about the escalation of this conflict to other countries, because it threatens peace and security throughout the Middle East and opens up the dangerous possibility of the direct involvement of the major world powers,” the minister said.
In his opinion, the failure to observe the principles of the United Nations Charter is at the root of many of the problems and tensions that we are seeing all over the planet, where particular geopolitical interests and ambitions, contrary to the values defended by the international community, prevail and affect the security of entire regions of the world.
The minister stressed that in this context, collective measures and solutions must be sought to make UN intervention more active and effective in preventing conflicts, strengthening world peace and security, international trade and cooperation to guarantee the prosperity of nations and the well-being of the peoples of our planet.FMA/ART/AMP
