Juba - The Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (FP- ICGLR) on Saturday in Juba, South Sudan, called on armed groups for an immediate cessation of hostilities and withdrawal from eastern of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a resolution adopted at the end of the 13th Ordinary Session of the ICGLR-PF Plenary Assembly, the members of the organization encouraged the implementation of the Luanda and Nairobi processes for the achievement of peace and stability in eastern DRC.
They also condemned attacks on peacekeepers and humanitarian workers, and urge the continued provision of assistance to internally displaced persons, refugees, victims of sexual violence, and other vulnerable groups.
The organization encourages the DRC government to prioritize national unity, strengthen the rule of law, promote political inclusion and peace building.
The parliamentarians saluted the Presidents of Angola, João Lourenço, and Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, for their joint efforts to support the DRC in its quest for stability in the east of the country.
The Parliamentary Forum also decided to send a fact-finding mission to eastern DRC to verify on the ground the efforts to achieve peace.
To the same end, statements on the situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan were approved.
These resolutions reinforce the need to achieve peace through dialogue to guarantee local and regional stability.
The parliamentarians also called for the promotion of parliamentary diplomacy as a way to contribute to the development of local communities.
