Huambo - Belém do Dango Electricity Substation, on the outskirts of the capital of the central Huambo province, will benefit more than 605,000 families in five provinces in the central and southern regions of the country.
The project, inaugurated Friday by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, in the presence of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, will connect the provinces of Huambo, Bié, Huíla, Cuando Cubango and Namibe to the Laúca dam, in the province of Malanje.
With an installed capacity of 900 MVA and an availability of 810 megawatts, it has been benefiting, since 2019, more than one million inhabitants of that region.
According to the head of the Exploration Department of the National Electricity Transport Network (RNT), Sebastião Menezes, of the total available megawatts, the current average consumption is between 75 and 78 megawatts.
He said that the close to 78 megawatts are being consumed by the inhabitants of Huambo city, Caála and Cuito, the latter in the province of Bié, in addition to the commune of Calenga and the municipal village of Bailundo, whose system went into operation Thursday.
He explained that the surplus of electricity was designed for other structuring investments, with emphasis on the expansion of the distribution network in the provinces of Huambo and Bié, in addition to the interconnection with the regions of Huíla, Namibe and Cuando Cubango.
The programme for interconnecting the province of Huíla to the national electricity system depends on the completion of demining work in the area where the high voltage electricity transmission poles will be installed.
The Belém do Dango substation, whose initial project is estimated at around USD400 million, is located in an area measuring 300 meters long and 250 meters wide.
The project includes electricity transmission of 400 kilometers and three substations.
