Luanda - The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, left this Wednesday for the capital of Mauritania, Nouakchott, in order to attend the inauguration ceremony of the re-elected President of that country, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.
At the ceremony, scheduled for Thursday (01), with the presence of dozens of African leaders, Esperança Costa will represent the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço.
In power since 2019, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani was re-elected in July for a new five-year term.
The politician won the election with 56% of the votes, against 22% for activist Biram Dah Abeid and 13% for Hamadi Ould Sidi El Mokhtar, who belongs to the Tawassoul Islamic Political Party.
The election had seven competitors, six of whom were civilians, who promised, in the electoral campaign, to promote democratic alternation, combat corruption and promote employment.
Ghazouani came to power in 2019, in an election that marked the first democratic transfer of power in that country since independence from France in 1960.
Since 1978, Mauritania has experienced several military coups, which resulted in a series of governments constituted and led by or supported by the military.
