Luanda - President João Lourenço traveled on Friday, Jan 10, to the city of Kampala, Uganda, to participate in the extraordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the African Union on the Comprehensive Program for Development of Agriculture in Africa (CAADP).
At 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, President João Lourenço was bid farewell by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, and other personalities.
At the continental organization's event, which will take place on Saturday, Jan 11, the Angolan Head of State will lead the work in his capacity as 1st vice-president of the AU Assembly Bureau.
The extraordinary meeting started on Thursday, Jan 8, with the ministerial session of those responsible for Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment and will run until Saturday (11).
The event will review Angola's Memorandum of Participation in the Ministerial Sessions on CAADP, its Draft Strategy and Action Plan for the period 2026-2036 and the Draft Kampala Declaration on Building Resilient Sustainable Agri-food Systems in Africa.
Since its creation in 2003 in Maputo, the Comprehensive Program for the Development of Agriculture in Africa has played a crucial role in the continent's agricultural transformation, with the aim of increasing food security and nutrition, reducing rural poverty, creating jobs and contribute to economic development and safeguarding the environment.
CAADP aims to achieve an annual growth rate of 6% in the agricultural sector by allocating at least 10% of African Union Member States' budgets to agriculture.
The AU was established on May 26, 2002, when its Constitutive Act came into force, replacing the Organization of African Unity (OAU), created in 1963.
In February this year, the Angolan President, João Lourenço, willl assume the leadership of the continental organization for a 1 year term.
Currently the continental organization brings together 55 African countries.
