Luanda - The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, arrived in Luanda on Sunday night, after having participated in the 6th biannual coordination meeting between the African Union (AU), the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the Regional Mechanisms (RM) which took place in Accra, Ghana.
At the 04 de Fevereiro International Airport, the Head of State received greetings from the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, among other individuals.
Before participating in the meeting, the President of the Republic addressed the strengthening of bilateral relations with his counterpart from Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh.
In his speech, as Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), he said that the continent faces immense challenges that constitute real obstacles to meeting the objectives of the integration agendas as Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms.
On the other hand, he recalled that SADC decided to send a detachment of forces to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with the aim of collaborating with the Congolese government to find the best ways to stabilize the country.
Under the motto 'Educating and Empowering Africa for the 21st Century', the main objectives of the meeting are to promote a clear division of labour and effective collaboration between the AU, economic communities, regional mechanisms and member states of the continental organisation, in order to be aligned with the principle of subsidiarity, complementarity and comparative advantage.
The Biannual Coordination Meeting was conceived in 2017 as the main forum for the AU and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to align their work and coordinate the implementation of the continental integration agenda, replacing the June/July summits.
This year, the event takes place under the motto “Educate and Empower Africa for the 21st Century”, and the event was preceded by the 45th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, which took place from 18 to 19 July 2024 in this same city of Accra (Ghana).
The African Union (AU), the continent's main organization, was founded in 2002 and is the successor to the Organization of African Unity (OAU), established in 1963.
It brings together 52 republics and three monarchies, bringing together a total population of about 1,068,444,000 inhabitants. VIC/DOJ
