Luanda – Angolan president João Lourenço left Thursday for Windhoek, Namibia, to take part in the inauguration of Namibian Head of State Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, elected in November.
At the 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, the Head of State, accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, received farewell greetings from the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, aides from the Executive Branch, among others.
The event, to which several heads of state and government have been invited, in particular the President of the Republic and of the African Union, João Lourenço, marks a traditional double act that is of paramount importance for Namibia.
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah won the seventh general elections last November, with 57% of the total votes of two million voters, in what was thought to be one of the most challenging elections for the SWAPO party, which has been in power for 35 years.
She will succeed interim President Nangolo Mbumba, who took power after the death of Hage Geingob in February 2024.
His main opponent, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) candidate, Panduleni Itula, came second with 25.50% of the vote. VIC/AMP
