Dundo – The secretary of State for Local Elections, Fernando da Paixão, on Tuesday in Lunda-Norte Province reiterated that journalists are once again called upon to be true soldiers of democracy and citizenship, during the General Population and Housing Census2024, scheduled to begin on July 19.
The official reiterated this appeal during the seminar on the General Census, highlighting that journalists must assume the mission of raising awareness, educating, mobilizing and communicating in a world that is characterized as increasingly global, for the process to be successful.
To him, it is up to journalists to provide the necessary clarifications about the General Census and verify references to the process, through traditional media, as well as through social networks and digital platforms.
“This process requires careful preparation conducive to mobilization and positive coverage, which builds values so that the entire population can be sensitized”, he stressed.
He also called for the involvement of traditional authorities, young people and churches, in raising awareness and mobilizing the population so that everyone can provide census operators with all the information necessary for the success of the process.
“I want to reiterate your enthusiasm, your creativity and positive reverence for mobilizing and raising awareness among other young people so that everyone can aim for dignified participation and effective collaboration”, he highlighted.
Projection for Lunda-Norte
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) plans to register, in Lunda-Norte, over 1,53 million inhabitants in the next census, which will begin on the 19th of July this year, against the 862,000 and 566 people in the 2014 Census.
The information was provided by the head of INE's provincial services in Lunda-Norte, Leão Cazade, highlighting that the process will be ensured by 2,894 field agents to be recruited to cover 3,400 census sections in the ten municipalities.
In 2023, Lunda-Norte carried out the Pilot Census in 174 census sections, with the aim of testing readiness level for the intervention of all procedures associated with the operational, logistical, technical, functional and operational implementation, for the success of the general census.
The process was carried out by 176 census takers, 23 technical assistants, 10 cartographers and four Information Technology specialists.
Data collection will last 30 days and will cover the 164 municipalities, 562 communes, districts, neighborhoods and villages of the country's 18 provinces, both in urban and rural areas.
Angola has already carried out two similar processes, in 1970 and 2014.
