Luanda - The Southern African Development Community hopes to have efficient legal instruments to fulfill the organization's objectives, as recommended by the region's Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General.
According to the director of the Exchange Office of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Dilma Chuva, this is one of the results expected from the Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General of SADC that began Monday, in Luanda, with preliminary expert meetings.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the virtual meeting, the official explained that, among the objectives, the expectation is that this group, which will be meeting until the 14th of this month, will make such a recommendation to the Council of Ministers and the Summit of Heads of State and SADC Government.
It is expected that the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General will contribute to the definition of policies aimed at achieving the development and economic growth of the southern region, as well as the other objectives of the Community.
After this meeting, she continued, it is also expected that the Council of Ministers and the Summit of Heads of State and Government will proceed with the assessment, approval, adoption and signing of legal instruments for the definition of global policies, with a view to implementing the Organization’s headquarters.
This meeting is being chaired by the Angolan minister of Justice and Human Rights, Marcy Cláudio Lopes, as Angola took over the rotating presidency of the Organization in 2023.
For its effective implementation, it will comprise two (2) sessions, namely the Meeting of Senior Officials for Legal Affairs, from the 10th to the 13th of June, and the Meeting of the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General, scheduled for the 14th of June.
During these four days, the Draft Agreement that Establishes the SADC Tourism UNIVISA, the Draft Agreement that amends the SADC Treaty to recognize the Double Troika as a Structure of the Organization and the Draft Declaration on the Protection of People with Albinism.
According to a document from the Exchange Office of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, this period will also focus on the Status of Signature, Ratification and Adhesion to SADC Legal Instruments.
Until Friday, the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General will also debate the resume of the SADC Court; the Revision of Article 33 of the Organization's Treaty; the Review of the Action Plan of the Committee of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General.
Finally, the gathering will analyze the progress made in complying with the decisions taken at the previous meeting, held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, on July 20, 2023, as well as studying the Appointment of a Judge to the Community Administrative Court.
