Luanda - Prince Harry, ambassador of The Halo Trust, on Friday praised the commitment of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in the demining process in Angola.
The recognition was made during an event held in New York, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, which honored Angola's dedication to demining in the country.
Prince Harry, who has already been to Angola on a mission for the Halo Trust, stressed that involvement in this mission meant a lot to his mother, Princess Diana, who was also dedicated to the cause of demining.
On the occasion, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, made it known that Angola is one of the few countries in the world that pays for its own demining, spending about US$60 million.
“This is an experience that has been attracting the attention of many countries affected by conflicts,” said the head of Angolan diplomacy, who participated in the event on behalf of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.
The event took place under the motto 'Celebrating Angola's success in promoting economic opportunity' and aimed to mobilize the attention of the global press in order to inspire other landmine-affected countries and thus motivate donor nations and the private sector to invest in the country's future.
Angola has cleared thousands of hectares in recent years, which is allowing the return to agriculture and tourism in areas previously inaccessible due to the presence of landmines.
The Halo Trust operates in countries such as Angola, Afghanistan (where it concentrates the largest operation), Cambodia, Mozambique, Somalia, Kosovo, Chechnya, Nagorno Karabakh and Abkhazia.
Since 1995, it has developed its mechanical mine clearing capacity for more than 120 sites, operating worldwide. FMA/ART/DOJ
