Luanda – Angolan president João Lourenço met Tuesday in Luanda with his South Sudanese counterpart, Salva Kiir Mayardit, with whom he discussed issues related to the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the conflict in Sudan.
Speaking at the end of the meeting, Angola’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Téte António, said the two statesmen essentially discussed the peace process in the DRC and the conflict in Sudan, taking into account President João Lourenço's role as mediator in the conflict between Rwanda and the DRC.
Téte Antoinio recalled that, as president-in-office of the East African Community (EAC), Salva Kiir Mayardit has responsibilities in the Nairobi process and is a mediator in the conflict in Sudan.
The Angolan minister said there was a convergence of views in terms of their analysis of the two conflicts, as they agreed to continue working in coordination for peace in these regions.
Téte António emphasised that João Lourenço and Salva Kiir Mayardit discussed issues related to bilateral relations, recalling that the countries have a rich history, from the point of view of the support Angola gave to South Sudan during the struggle for independence.
Angola and South Sudan enjoy excellent relations of friendship and cooperation. Both are part of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), an organization created in 1994 with the aim of resolving peace and security issues in the area. VIC/ADR/TED/AMP
