Luanda - The Speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, on Monday in Luanda expressed solidarity with the population of Mauritius affected by cyclone Belal.
In a message to her Mauritian counterpart, Sooroojdev Phokeer, the leader of the Angolan parliament hopes that the worrying situation will be overcome as quickly as possible and with the commitment of the institutions, so that normality can return.
"It is with deep concern and dismay that I have been following the devastating effect of Cyclone Belal on Mauritius, causing extensive human and material damage. At this difficult time I would like, on behalf of the National Assembly of Angola and on my own behalf, to express our solidarity", reads the message to which ANGOP had access.
Carolina Cerqueira says she is aware of the concern that led to the discussion, at the last Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum, held from 22 to 26 November 2023 in Port Louis, Mauritius, regarding the harmful effects of climate change on the social and material stability of member countries, as well as the prevention, containment and repair measures that should be prioritised to help the victims of natural disasters and protect infrastructure and property.
