Luanda - The Speaker of Angola National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, on Friday in Luanda, emphasized the role parliamentary diplomacy plays for peace to be achieved.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on parliamentary action, justice and strong institutions, the Speaker said parliamentary diplomacy, at all levels, has never been more urgent and necessary to raise awareness among governments and the various institutions in favour of peace.
The Speaker urged MPs to continue to develop strong and active parliamentary action, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approved in 2015 is an action plan centred on the defence of people and the planet, which incorporates a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Essentially, the plan aims to achieve prosperity that respects the planet and its inhabitants divided into 169 goals to be met by 2030, with a view to providing a global response to climate change and other phenomena.
Carolina Cerqueira added that through legislative initiative, the adoption of budgets and oversight of the government, the National Assembly is pushing for better governance at national, regional and local level, and restoring the conditions for social peace capable of supporting sustainable development and promoting literacy at all levels.
"The Assembly in Luanda reaffirmed the need for parliaments to include more young people and women, minority and disadvantaged groups in discussions and decisions," Cerqueira said.
To the Speaker, the current generation of parliamentarians has the task of breaking the ghosts of the dark side of human history and promoting efforts to bequeath a world of peace and prosperity.
As regards to gender, Carolina Cerqueira underscored the value of women in the fight for the defence of peace in the world, for sustainable development, particularly in family farming, trade, education and social action in favor of the most disadvantaged populations to be unquestionable.
"This Assembly has demonstrated the importance of inclusion, particularly of young people, the main human potential of our countries, as well as of women, who make up the majority of our populations worldwide," the lawmaker said.
The politician said she felt a sense of accomplishment for the values of friendship, cooperation, dialogue and fraternity defended between Africans and the rest of the world represented by parliamentarians.
