Luanda - The National Assembly Speaker Carolina Cerqueira defended Wednesday the need for respect to human rights and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Speaking to ANGOP on the sidelines of the Plenary Meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Speakers (IPU), Carolina Cerqueira said the situation in the Middle East requires respect for International Humanitarian Law, focusing on safeguarding the human lives of Israelis and Palestinians.
According to Carolina Cerqueira, it is up to the State of Israel to defend its security while respecting the security of the Palestinians and neighboring states, underlining that amendments to United Nations Security Council's statutes could promote fundamental steps towards world peace.
The Speaker added that this was the message that the 130 delegations from around the world have been sending out in their various speeches and public demonstrations.
The General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is expected to adopt several resolutions, in particular on "trafficking in orphanages: the role of parliaments in harm reduction". VM/AMP
