Luanda – The Speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, on Wednesday in Luanda discussed with a delegation from the Regional Secretariat of the Pan-African Women’s Organization (PAWO) the vulnerability situation facing women and children in Africa.
During the audience, Carolina Cerqueira received information on the activities in PAWO’s agenda and the programme in the ambit of the commemoration of July 31, African Women’s Day, which this this year will happen under the motto “Invesing in the education of women and girls to guarantee the future of Africa”.
Carolina Cerqueira – who is known to be a stern defender of the rights of females and children, plus for engagement in acts of social responsibility and citizenship – informed that through the specialised committees of the National Assembly she will collaborate with the civil society in approaching families and communities.
She stressed that the Parliament, as an expression of the people, has been developing a permanent advocacy in defence of women’s rights and combating gender-based violence and against children.
During the commemorative programme, the organization is to promote discussions on the historic role of African women in the construction of peaceful societies, solidarity and respect for human rights.
PAWO admits that it still has serious challenges relating to the search for gener equality in education, as well s in the fight against child marriage, early pregnance, violence against women and the lack of appropriate infrastructures.
The organization is equally involved in global matters, such as climate change. ART/jmc
