Luanda - Angolan Head of State João Lourenço Monday congratulated his counterpart of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, for his re-election to the post.
"I have the honour of congratulating you, on behalf of the Angolan People, Government and on my own, for your re-election to the post of President of the Portuguese Republic," the Angolan statesman wrote in a message to the Portuguese leader.
"During the mandate, which now begins, Angola and Portugal will continue to follow the path of strengthening friendship and cooperation in all areas that will allow our two countries to achieve common objectives in terms of development," said the Angolan head of state in the message.
Joao Lourenço wished Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa "great success in carrying out his noble mission as President of the Republic," and said he had the support of his counterpart in actions to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa won Sunday's presidential elections (24), with 60.7 percent of the votes, for another (second) five-year term.
According to official figures, Ana Gomes was in second place with 12.97 percent of the vote, followed by André Ventura (11.90 percent).
The fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and extremism are among the priorities of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
