Kinshasa - Angolan president João Lourenço Thursday in Kinshasa recommended the search for the best solutions for peace, stability and for the promotion of development in the Great Lakes region.
João Lourenço was speaking at the opening of the 10th Meeting of Heads of State and Government signatories of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Stability and Cooperation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes region.
As chairperson of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), João Lourenço said he believed that the region is awakening to the construction of stability and security, as factors for reducing poverty and building the well-being of the people.
The Angolan statesman recognised the importance of the multilateral mechanism for the achievement of lasting peace, in the DRC and region, in favour of the growth and development of the member countries.
In his speech, he urged the Heads of State and representatives of regional and international organisations to work on defence of peace, security and political and social stability in the countries integrating the region.
João Lourenço appealed for the continuous search for constructive solutions to resolve existing conflicts, through the implementation of national and regional commitments undertaken under the Framework Agreement.
Meanwhile, the Head of State welcomed the understanding between Rwanda and Uganda, which allowed the opening of the Gatuna/Katuna border post, as well as the unilateral declaration of ceasefire decreed by the Government of the Central African Republic.
He welcomed the actions that have contributed to the peace and stability in the region such as the improvement of relations between states in the region.
In his speech, the Angolan statesman congratulated the President of the DRC on its efforts to irradiate the rebel groups and the reconciliation between all the Congolese living forces, ensuring a climate of trust among the different political actors.
The acting President of the ICGLR regretted the existence of "persistent difficulties" in the disarmament, demobilisation, reintegration and resettlement of former rebels, due to the absence of processes of political inclusion in social life.
He pointed out that the marked slowness of the border and the slow process of demarcating national borders is due, in part, to the lack of available resources.
João Lourenço expressed concern about the attacks by terrorist groups in the east of the DRC and in other member countries, calling for the strengthening of regional cooperation in the field of security.
At the summit, the President of the Republic invited African countries to participate in the conference on the occurrence of coups d'état and terrorism on 28 - 29 May in Equatorial Guinea, having discouraged such practices.
