Gaborone – The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, is paying a visit to the headquarters of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), in Gaborone, Botswana, in his capacity as acting chairman of the regional organization.
The statesman, who arrived in Gaborone this morning, unveiled the plaque marking his first visit to the SADC headquarters.
Upon his arrival, the President was received by the Executive Secretary of SADC, Elias Magosi, who directed him to the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda waiting room, on the 7th Floor, to sign the guest book.
This was followed by a visit to the Julius Nyerere Library to appreciate the organization's history collection and an occasional photography session in front of the SADC building.
In keeping with his agenda at SADC headquarters, where he must work until mid-afternoon, João Lourenço is to meet with members of the Executive Board, in the Sir Seretse Khama main hall.
On the occasion, a video will be played on the SADC Vision and the priority areas of the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP 2020-2030), on the mandate, functions and structure of the Secretariat and distribution of responsibilities.
Information on SADC priorities and the general status of regional integration (current status, emerging issues and recommendations) is also included in the meeting points.
At the meeting, the SADC president will have the opportunity to guide the Secretariat on the concrete actions that need to be implemented, taking into account the initiatives taken by Angola with the holding of extraordinary summits dedicated to the issue of cholera in the region and the impact of the phenomenon El Nino.
The final part of the program reserves a meeting with the professional staff of the SADC Secretariat, at which the President of the Republic is expected to speak.
