Luanda – President oão Lourenço meets on Tuesday with the government of the Cuanza-Sul province, on the second day of his visit to the region to learn more about the local socio-economic situation.
Cuanza-Sul governor, Mara Quiosa, presented the general picture of the region in the areas of Education, Health, Higher Education, Social Action, Family, Women, Youth and Sports, Justice and Human Rights.
Maria Quiosa added that the province with a territorial extension of more than 55,000 km² and an estimated population of 2,441,000 inhabitants has satisfactorily executed the Integrated Municipal Intervention Plan (PIIM), at 82%, with a total of 125 projects.
The governor said the province has 490 schools, which is insufficient to prevent 131,334 children from being left out of the education system, adding that at least 526,221 pupils have been enrolled for the current school year.
As regards to the Girl Empowerment and Learning for All Project, Cuanza Sul has 9,852 pupils in the first cycle of secondary education, who have already benefited from scholarships.
The governor called for reinforcement in terms of schools, school boards, computer and laboratory equipment, giving good marks to the program of desks distribution, as the region has already received 68,000 desks, as part of the ongoing reinforcement plan.
Mara Quiosa also asked for special attention to be paid to the issue of including children with special needs.
The governor underscored that despite benefiting from a tertiary level hospital on Monday, there is the need for a facelift to be given to the Pediatric Hospital, which flooded during the recent rains and halted operations.
The President is spending the second and last day of his working day in Cuanza-Sul, after inaugurating the Sumbe General Hospital on Monday and is expected to visit an Agricultural Products Exhibition Fair and the construction works of the integrated infrastructures of Sumbe city on Tuesday.ART/TED/AMP
