Luanda – Angolan President João Lourenço received the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America, Lloyd James Austin, on Wednesday, at Presidential Palace in Luanda, with whom he addressed the strengthening of cooperation relations in the field of defense and security.
In brief words to the press, upon leaving the meeting, Lloyd Austin said that he presented to President João Lourenço the new angles of US policy towards Africa, highlighting his country's intention to strengthen partnerships for the promotion of peace, security and governance, based in the rule of law.
In Angola since Tuesday, for a 24-hour visit, as part of a tour of Africa, which has already taken him to Djibouti and Kenya, Lloyd Austin also held a courtesy meeting with officials of the Ministry of National Defense, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland.
This is the first visit by a US Secretary of Defense to Angola. Lloyd Austin is scheduled to give a speech today at National Historical Archives, on the new angles of US policy towards Africa, under the motto "The power of partnership”.
Lloyd James Austin was sworn in as the 28th Secretary of Defense on January 22, 2021.
