Luanda - President João Lourenço on Tuesday, in Luanda, received a message from his Liberian counterpart, Joseph Nyumah Boakai, expressing his interest in relaunching cooperation between the two states.
The letter was delivered by the Liberian statesman's special envoy, Sheick Al-Moustapha Kouyateh, during an audience granted to him by President João Lourenço.
Speaking to the press, Sheick Al-Moustapha Kouyateh said that he had delivered a message of brotherhood, dealing with diplomatic, commercial and social development issues, as well as an invitation for the Angolan Head of State to visit the Republic of Liberia, on a date to be agreed by the parties.
At the time, he spoke of the existence of a spirit of brotherhood between the two countries, linked since the time of Angolan first President Agostinho Neto and the 19th president of Liberia William Tubman.
According to the special envoy, the idea is to reactivate relations, because the Liberian President sees Angola as a great country and believes in the leadership and experience of his Angolan counterpart.
He said that his country had a lot to learn from Angola, pointing out that Liberia would not be what it is today without its help, and emphasised the fact that in the past it had hosted many Liberian cadres.
He therefore expressed his interest in seeing relations strengthened in the economic, diplomatic, commercial, education and tourism areas.
The official expressed his conviction that João Lourenço's support for their recently elected president would be a great advantage if Liberia is to be set on the path to development.
In September 2011, Angola and Liberia signed the General Agreement on Economic, Commercial, Technical, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation and the Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of the Political Consultation Mechanism.
On 27 May 2022, the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, and the then Liberian President, George Weah, met in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, on the sidelines of the African Union's Extraordinary Summit on Humanitarian Issues and Donors' Conference, during which they envisaged strengthening bilateral relations.
