Luanda – Angolan president João Lourenço took part Friday in a virtual meeting of heads of state and government promoted by the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), to discuss the situation in Sudan.
In a statement, the Presidency of the Republic said the initiative for the meeting came from Uganda, the country chairing the AU Peace and Security Council this month, and resulted from an assessment of the deteriorating political and military situation in Sudan, which made it imperative to pay special attention to the conflict.
President Yoweri Museveni has promoted dialogue at the highest level on the road to achieving lasting and viable solutions to the Sudanese peace process.
A year ago, the African Union Roadmap for the Resolution of the Conflict in Sudan was adopted but, on the ground, the situation has proved catastrophic, with a large number of civilian casualties and destruction of infrastructure.
The war broke out in April 2023 between the army led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo.
The conflict has caused tens of thousands of deaths and displaced more than nine million people, according to the United Nations.
Both sides have been accused of war crimes for deliberately targeting civilians, bombing populated areas and blocking humanitarian aid, despite the threat of famine faced by millions of Sudanese. VIC/AMP
