Ondjiva – The President of the Republic, Joao Lourenço, assured that the construction of the Nduê dam, underway in the municipality of Cuvelai, Cunene province, will be completed by the end of this year.
The leader of the Angolan Executive Branch, who is on a three-day working visit to the province of Cunene, said at a press conference that the work will be ready by the end of this year.
At this conference, the President also said that, next year (2025), the Calucuve dams, also under construction in Cuvelai, and Cova do Leão, in the municipality of Cahama, will also be completed.
“Therefore, there will be four important projects that will minimize the effects of drought in this part of the territory,” he said.
With 9,200 hectares of irrigated area and a reservoir of 2000 hectares to store 170 million cubic meters of water, the Nduê dam is located on the Caundo River, 250 kilometers northwest of Ondjiva, the seat of the provincial capital.
It is an earthen dam 26 m high and 1500 meters long, with a network of adductors in an extension of 75 kilometers from Ndue to the town of Embudo, municipality of Cuanhama, and 15 more chimpacas.
The lot 5 project, which started in March 2022, when it is completed will benefit around 55,000 families, who live along the canal, and 60,000 animals, having guaranteed direct employment to a total of 897 people, of which 772 are nationals and 125 expatriates.
As part of the Program to Combat the Effects of Drought in Southern Angola (PCESSA), the project aims to reduce water scarcity in the Cuvelai basin, supply water to the population and livestock, ensure food security, promote the strengthening of agriculture.
The project, led by Synohidro Angola, with an execution period of 30 months, has an estimated budget of around 192 million dólares.FI/FA/LHE/ART
