Luanda - The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, congratulated the people and the Government of Kenya for the celebration, today, December 12, of the National Independence Day of this country.
In a message sent to the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto, the Angolan Head of State praised the progress made by that East African country in important areas of its national life, as well as the contribution of all its citizens who mobilized and united around the great goals of the nation.
The President of the Republic, in the same message, declares himself pleased to note that relations between the two countries have reached a very high level, with prospects for fruitful exchange based on the potential they have.
João Lourenço also refers to his recent official visit to Kenya, an opportunity that served to appreciate, at the highest level, the paths of bilateral cooperation.
The friendly relationship between Angola and Kenya dates back to the years of the struggle for our independence, when the then President of the Republic of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, gathered the leaders of the Angolan liberation movements at the same table in 1975 to align a common vision on their liberation.
But cooperation, in the broad sense of the word, took shape in 2010, when Kenya Airways began flying to Luanda, under an agreement in the air transport sector, signed a year later, that is, in 2011.
Meanwhile, in 2014, Angola and Kenya signed four agreements that strengthened bilateral cooperation, namely, the General Agreement on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation; the Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya; the Agreement on the Establishment of the Bilateral Commission; the Agreement for the Operation of Air Services between and beyond their respective territories in the field of transport.
