Paris - Angolan President João Lourenço was awarded the highest distinction of the French state, the Order of the Officer of the French Legion of Honor, on Thursday in Paris.
The medal was presented to João Lourenço by President Emmanuel Macron, unexpectedly, since it was not part of the program of the Angolan statesman's 48-hour state visit to France.
In a few words, the Angolan statesman expressed his satisfaction and surprise at the gesture made by his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.
The award was created on May 20, 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and rewards merits to the French nation and homeland.
It is considered the country's highest honor and is awarded by the President of the French Republic.
The head of state receives the Grand Cross and becomes Grand Master of the Order during the presidential inauguration ceremony.
