Addis Ababa - Angolan head of State João Lourenço should submit a report to the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled for February 18 and 19 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The presentation of report was voiced by the Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU), Francisco José da Cruz.
Addressing a 45th Session of the African Union’s Permanent Representatives Committee (COREP), José da Cruz said he expects the Angolan president, João Lourenço, to present his first report as AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation.
The extraordinary summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa, held on 28 May 2022, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, named President João Lourenço as AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation.
The forum established the date of 31 January as the “Day of Reconciliation and Peace Building in Africa”.
The goal is to encourage the consolidation of peace and social cohesion at the national, regional and continental levels.
The COREP meeting, which will run until the 27th of this month, prepares the 42nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, a ministerial body, scheduled for the February 15th and 16th, which in turn will create the conditions for holding the 36th Ordinary Session of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
The opening ceremony of COREP was attended by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the Ambassador of Senegal, Mohamed Thiaw Lamine, who chairs the meeting.
The summit of statesmen should analyse and approve the strategic reports on the AU, namely on peace and security, regional integration, economic, financial, social and energy policies, as well as specific thematic matters.
During COREP and the Executive Council, Angola will provide information on the second edition of the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace - Luanda Biennial, held in October 2021 and the roadmap for the third edition scheduled for the second half of this year.
The Luanda biennial takes place every two years, bringing together actors and partners from a pan-African movement committed to preventing violence and conflicts and promoting a comprehensive culture of peace, based on the principles of human rights and the fight against corruption and impunity in Africa.
The Angolan delegation will also present a report on the 10th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), which took place in December 2022, in Luanda.
The Luanda summit was the first after the transformation of the ACP Group into an International Organisation.
Angola took over the presidency of the OACPS for three years.
OACPS comprises States, of which 47 from Africa.
