Luanda - The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, travelled on Sunday to the city of Kigali, Republic of Rwanda, where he will witness the inauguration of President Paul Kagame, re-elected in July this year for a five-year term.

At the 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, João Lourenço received farewell greetings from the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, and other individuals.

Paul Kagame became President of Rwanda in 2000, elected by Parliament, after the resignation of the then Head of State, Pasteur Bizimungu, which was followed by four other elections by universal suffrage.

The leader has been one of the dominant figures in Rwanda since he overthrew the Hutu government with the forces of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) in July 1994.

In the legislative elections, which took place simultaneously, the hegemony of the presidential party (FPR) was also confirmed, which collected 68.83% of the votes.

This East African nation has been independent since July 1, 1962 and has an area of 26,340 square kilometers, where about 13.6 million live, which base its economy mainly on tourism, mining and agriculture.

Rwanda has a mountainous and landlocked territory, bordering Burundi (south), the Democratic Republic of Congo (west), Uganda (north) and Tanzania (east).

As a result of the mediation efforts of the Angolan President, as champion of peace of the African Union (AU), this country signed, on June 30 of this year, a ceasefire agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which focuses on the eastern region of the country. ART/DOJ
