Addis Ababa - The African Union must work “hard” to find solutions to the “challenges” of maintaining peace and security on the continent, the president of the African Governance Architecture, Angolan Wilson Adão, said Thursday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 38th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, the president of the Peace and Security Architecture, as well as the Committee on the Rights of the Child, said there is a re-emergence of many armed conflicts in Africa.
He cited the case of Sudan, which he characterized as “the biggest conflict and the biggest global crisis, unfortunately, considered by the press as a forgotten conflict, but, at the moment, the one that causes the most death and suffering worldwide”.
Adão highlighted the resurgence of armed conflicts in the Sahel, eastern DRC and other parts of the African continent, which require attention from African leaders.
He stressed the need for coordination among AU bodies, with the aim of promoting peace, respect for human rights and good governance, as well as issues related to defense, peace and security on the continent.
Addis Ababa will host the 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union on Saturday, during which President João Lourenço will assume the leadership of the organization.
The high-level summit was preceded by several events, most notably the 46th session of the AU Executive Council, which on Wednesday reviewed the report of the 49th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly.
It considered the annual report on the activities of the Union, its organs and champions, the report of the 15th session of the Council of Ministers of Trade of the Continental Free Trade Area, as well as the public health emergency of continental security.
The delegates also considered the draft legal instruments, reports of the Executive Council Committees, items proposed by Member States, the draft agenda and draft decisions of the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
