Luanda – The National Assembly Speaker, Carolina Cerqueira, received Tuesday a Nigerian parliamentary delegation, led by Commissioner Bilyaminu Shinkafi, with whom she discussed parliamentary cooperation.
The foreign delegation is in Angola for a five-day working visit, as part of the exchange of experiences.
On the occasion, the parliamentary leader spoke of the historical ties between the two countries and thanked the Nigerian people for their participation in the proclamation of Angola's national Independence.
From this perspective, she highlighted the name of Murtala Mohamed Street, in Luanda, (named after the 4th President of Nigeria) as a symbol of friendship between the two peoples.
Parliamentary Exchange
Regarding the visit of the Nigerian delegation, Carolina Cerqueira was “honored” and hopes that there will be “a lot of exchange” between the two parliaments.
The president of the National Assembly pointed to the example of Angola in consolidating democracy, having referred to the presence of different political forces in Parliament as the most visible sign of the people's representation.
She highlighted, on the other hand, female representation (38%) and the representation of young people at parliamentary level.
The head of the House of Laws also spoke about the participation and contribution of the National Assembly in regional and global legislative organizations.
By the way, she announced that Angola will host the 55th Plenary Assembly of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, which will take place from the 1st to the 7th of July this year.
Legislative Production
The municipal legislative package, under review in Parliament, was also addressed by the National Assembly Speaker, who emphasized the importance of these laws for the sustainable development of the country, mainly in social domains.
Carolina Cerqueira considered the legislative production of the last two legislative periods to be satisfactory, and the report to this effect is already underway.
Finally, Nigerian parliamentarians were invited to attend the next extraordinary plenary meeting, which will take place next Friday, June 7.
Potentialities of the Parliament of Angola
On the part of the Nigerian delegation, Commissioner Bilyaminu Shinkafi thanked the Angolan people for their hospitality.
He explained that it has been an annual practice, to exchange experiences, to visit other parliaments.
Bilyaminu Shinkafi recognized the potential of the Angolan Parliament in the area of human resources and management of the parliamentary building.
