Luanda - Angola is to create two more provinces totaling 20 provinces and 325 municipalities from the present (18 provinces and 164 municipalities), a statement issued by the Cabinet Council said Friday.
At the meeting chaired by the Head of State, João Lourenço, the Cabinet Council agreed that the division of Moxico and Cuando Cubando provinces should be top priority.
According to the spokesperson of the Cabinet Council, Rosa Cruz e Silva, the Cabinet assessed and approved the amendment on the Political-Administrative Division (DPA).
The Cabinet Council agrees with the draft law to elevate 161 communes and urban districts to the category of municipalities throughout the country, resulting in a total of 325 municipalities.
It underlined that an implementation strategy for the new DPA should be ensured through the hiring and training of human resources, gradual investments for the infrastructure of the new territorial units and a communication strategy for citizens to learn about the process and enable services to be closer to the people.
The Minister of State and Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic, Adão de Almeida, said the process that began two and a half years ago is to have major impact on five of the country's provinces namely Moxico, Cuando Cubango, Lunda Norte, Uíge and Malanje, and that the goal is to increase from 164 to around 580 municipalities.
Adão de Almeida added that the new DPA process will promote a reform in territorial organization and in the way the territory is managed, so that citizens have organs providing services closer to them and with greater potential for solving their problems.
