Luanda - The resident coordinator of the United Nations Zahira Virani called  Wednesday on the legislature to institutionalise a development model centered on people that responds to the needs of citizens, ahead of the 2030 agenda.

Zahira Virani was speaking at the opening of the Workshop on Prosperity, Development and Sustainability, as part of  2030 Agenda and its Development and Sustainability Goals (SDGs).

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.

At its core are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call to action by all developed and developing countries in a global partnership.

According to the resident coordinator of the United Nations in Angola, the 2030 agenda recognises the essential role of national Parliaments through the legislation enactment, as well as the adoption of budgets and their role in ensuring accountability for the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The official said that Parliaments can more effectively support and influence the full achievement of the SDGs, considering their interconnections and guiding policies work, in order to guarantee necessary, coherent and complementary laws to achieve the national development plan, as well as the 2030 agenda.

She recalled that when in 2015 the member countries of the United Nations, including Angola, approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, "together we created a comprehensive proposal, with an action plan centered on 17 SDGs, to face global and national challenges and enable more equitable and accessible opportunities for all".

She argued that it is with this concern that the Secretary General of the United Nations called, in September of this year, the Summit on the SDGs, under the leadership of the General Assembly of the UN, urging all countries to unite around a Rescue Plan for People and with a rational commitment to transforming the SDGs.

Commitment of States

Meanwhile, the first vice-president of the National Assembly, Américo Cunonoca, emphasised, on the occasion, that the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals is the main commitment undertaken by States today.

He said, by the way, that the fortnightly plans presented by the Angolan State are based on technological innovations and the Sustainable Development Goals, which not only power the formulation of public policies but also guide all legislative production.

He called for a necessary reflection: how we are, what has been the role of public institutions in achieving these goals, "judging that the 2020-2030 decade is one of action, in which States must imprint and assume in their national strategies to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda".

The leader of the Group of Parliamentarians Women, Teresa da Silva Nero, pointed out that Angola has taken significant steps in preparing and approving the National Development Plan.

This Plan focuses on the development of human capital, the modernisation and expansion of the country's infrastructure and the intensification of the economy's diversification process. DC/AL/CF/NIC
