Luanda - The United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Monday, in New York, adopted the draft resolution entitled "Cooperation between the UN and the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP).
According to a press release from the Angolan Mission to the UN, the resolution notes the political commitment of the CPLP to promoting the Portuguese language in international and regional organizations, including the United Nations and its specialized agencies, funds and programs.
Speaking on behalf of the CPLP, Angolan Ambassador Maria de Jesus Ferreira said the community is a space united by the common use of language and gives primacy to peace, democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights, social justice and cultural ties.
According to the diplomat, the document presents the results of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the CPLP held in Luanda on July 2021 under the theme "Building and Strengthening a Common and Sustainable Future.
"The Community pledged to continue to promote political dialogue, exchange of experiences and cooperate to strengthen the commitment and partnership for the promotion and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development among member states", the Angolan diplomat said.
Angola currently holds the rotating chair of the CPLP, a community that joins nine member states, namely Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and East-Timor.
The Portuguese-speaking community in the world is estimated at more than 300 million people spread in four continents.
