Luanda - The Secretary of State for Mass Media, Nuno Caldas Albino, on Tuesday assured institutional support to Parliament for the successful holding of the 147th General Assembly of the Interparliamentary Union (IPU) to be held from 23 to 27 of this month in Luanda.
The event, which is being held for the first time in a Portuguese-speaking African country, is expected to bring together 1,400 parliamentarians from 173 member countries of this multilateral organisation.
Nuno Caldas Albino headed a delegation from the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Mass Media (MINTTICS) that went to Parliament to discuss technical details, among other things, as part of the IPU meeting and the opening of the 2nd Legislative Session of the National Assembly's 5th Legislature.
With regard to the IPU meeting, Nuno Caldas Albino urged the media to send a clear message to citizens about the essence or genesis of this multilateral organization.
He also defended the need for detailed approaches that can clarify things more clearly for the target audience.
The Secretary of State believes that it is important for this international event to scale up communication not only internally, but also to communities abroad and multilateral institutions.
On the same occasion, the director of the National Assembly's communication office, Domingos de Carvalho, provided clarifications to those responsible for the media coverage about the conditions created by the Parliament for journalists to carry out their work without constraints.
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)
Founded in 1889 on the initiative of Englishman William Randal Cremer and Frenchman Frédéric Passy, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international organization of the parliaments of sovereign states whose aim is to mediate multilateral contacts between parliamentarians.
The organization is intergovernmental, operates under the UN system and its main aim is to achieve peace and cooperation between peoples and the consolidation of representative institutions through dialogue.
Today, the IPU is the main parliamentary interlocutor with the United Nations and brings its voice to decision-making processes, regularly presenting its resolutions to the General Assembly, making statements, participating in debates and organizing parliamentary meetings on the main issues on the UN agenda.
In recognition of this important role, in 2002, the United Nations granted it permanent observer status. Angola has been a member of the IPU since 1986. The organization is currently led by Portuguese national, Duarte Pacheco. DC/SC/ADR/DAN/DOJ
