Moçâmedes – Angolan president João Lourenço arrived mid-afternoon in the city of Moçâmedes, southwestern Namibe province, for a two-day working visit.
In this southern coastal region, the Head of State will inaugurate the Iona National Park and address a meeting of the provincial government on Sunday to find out about the socio-economic situation in the region, as part of the Open Presidency program.
About Iona park
Situated in the Namibe Desert, in the south-west corner of Angola, with a rugged 160 kilometer coastline adjoining the Atlantic Ocean, Iona is one of the most sublime wilderness areas, with fertile terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Its central sands are bordered to the east by mountains that reach heights of two thousand meters and to the west by dunes along the entire coast.
The park is fed by two neighboring rivers, the Cunene and the Curoca and also contains extensive woodlands inhabited by cheetahs and leopards, herds of Oryx, gazelles and Hartmann's zebras, ostriches, reptiles and is home to one of the rarest plants in the world, the Welwitschia Mirabilis.
