Luanda - A delegation of prestigious African women praised on Friday in Luanda the Angolan president João Lourenço's efforts to achieve peace, stability and security in the Great Lakes Region.
The delegation, which is in Luanda to take part in the High Level Forum of Women of the Great Lakes Region, which was received in audience by the Angolan Head of State, thanked him for the role he has played to defend women's rights.
Speaking to the press on behalf of the others, the former president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, said the Angolan statesman's efforts are aimed at combating tensions in several countries in the region and the rest of the African continent.
“His commitment is aimed at promoting peace and women to put an end to the suffering they are subjected to, as well as children throughout Africa,” Sirleaf said.
At the Presidential Palace, in addition to Ellen Johnson, the audience included the former presidents of Ethiopia, Sahle Zewde, the Central African Republic, Catherine Samba-Panza, and the special envoy of the African Union Commission for Women, Peace and Security, Bineta Diogo.
Also present were Bintou Keita, special representative of the secretary general in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nkosozana Dlamini Zuma, former president of the African Union Commission, among others.
The Forum is a platform that brings together women leaders of the Great Lakes Region and aims to promote peace, security and sustainable economic development, focusing on gender equality and women's empowerment.
It was created to support the implementation of regional and international policies and agreements for peace and sustainable development.
Participants include academics, diplomats, politicians, members of international organizations and civil society.AFL/ART/AMP
