Madrid - A delegation of MPLA (the ruling party in Angola) has been in Madrid, Spain, to attend the 26th congress of the Socialist International taking place from 25-27 November.

The party is also expected to, among other matters, run for its re-election to the position of vice president of the organisation.

Headed by the vice president of the party, Luísa Damião,  the delegation will also participate in debates on “strengthening peace and consolidating democracy in the world”.

The event, which will bring together about a thousand people, will also address other topics such as “climate change and its impact on people’s lives”, “equality of gender”.

Speaking to the press, the secretary of the MPLA Politburo for International Relations, Manuel Augusto, expressed the party's intention to have a more active participation in the life of the Socialist International, an institution that brings together 170 party organisations from 120 countries.

As for the participation of the MPLA in the event, the politician said that it results from its commitment to international affairs and contributes to the maintenance and reinforcement of democracy in the world.

The Socialist International is an international organisation that seeks the dissemination and implementation of democratic socialism, through the union of social-democratic, socialist and labour political parties. It was founded June 3, 1951.

The MPLA was admitted as an observer member of the Socialist International in 1996. In 2002, it became a full member.

The political party was elected, for the first time, vice-president of this international organisation in 2008, having been re-elected in 2012 and 2017.
