Luanda - The Information Secretary of the ruling MPLA, Rui Falcão, on Thursday accused the main opposition party, UNITA, of orchestrating a "strategy to seize power outside the current institutional political framework".
According to the politician - who was reacting to a UNITA initiative aimed to submit “an Accusation and Removal Process of the President of the Republic'' - UNITA has a "subversive and immature" political agenda.
Last Wednesday, UNITA announced its intention to take to the Parliament a legal file that aims, in essence, to remove the President of the Republic from office.
Among other allegations, the largest opposition party points to alleged violations of the Constitution, interference in the legislative and judicial branches, and in the Central Bank of Angola by the Holder of the Executive Power, allegations that the MPLA refutes.
According to Rui Falcão, the seriousness of the accusations against the President shows that, with this attitude, UNITA has an agenda to create chaos in state institutions.
According to the politician, the strategy of creating a climate of institutional instability has been applied with permanent recourse to the discrediting of State institutions and the attempt to create a political framework that justifies the popular uprising and the rise of UNITA to the exercise of power, without democratic legitimation.
The politician added that UNITA's attitude shows total disrespect for Angolans and their sovereign will expressed at the polls on August 24, 2022.
Falcão added that the action taken to oust the President of the Republic, without facts that are based on the Constitution, "can only be created by a political organisation aware of its notorious and increasingly evident inability to live in a democratic and pluralistic society”.
According to Rui Falcão, with this irresponsible and anti-democratic behaviour, UNITA indicates that it intends to assume an attitude of rupture with institutional dialogue, especially in the National Assembly (parliament).
Rui Falcão recalled that UNITA had previuosly welcomed the dialogue initiative presented by the MPLA Parliamentary Group and that, in view of this, it presented a proposal for a dialogue agenda.
"With your statement, you demonstrate a total lack of seriousness and sense of statehood", he said, stressing that, in view of the seriousness of the accusations and facts led by UNITA, the MPLA has instructed its parliamentary group to take all measures to ensure that the Parliament is not instrumentalized.
In its statement, read by its spokesman, the MPLA recalls that UNITA felt deeply that its opportunity to take up the power had been postponed for another five years "and did not hesitate to create a set of suspicions to support the argument of the illegitimacy of the victory".
According to Rui Falcão, UNITA never had the courage to assume that MPLA was victorious in 143 out of the country's 164 municipalities and that, in 10 provinces, the MPLA won in all municipalities, namely: Bié, Huambo, Huíla, Namibe, Cunene, Moxico, Lunda Sul, Cuanza Norte, Cuando Cubango and Malanje.
