Luanda - The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulated, in a letter, his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, for his re-election as President of Angola.
In the message, the Portuguese Head of State also congratulates the main opposition candidate, the president of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, for the results obtained.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he hopes that Angolan political life will continue to develop in an environment of freedom, pluralism and tolerance.
António Costa's congratulations
The Portuguse Prime Minister, António Costa, also congratulated President-elect João Lourenço for his re-election.
The Head of the Portuguese Government extended his congratulations to the parties and other candidates who participated in the elections.
Costa also congratulated the Angolan people on their "enormous civic and political maturity.
The final results proclaimed by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), validated by the Constitutional Court, gave victory to MPLA and its candidate, João Lourenço, with 51.17 percent electing 124 deputies to the National Assembly.
These were the fifth elections in Angola, after those held in 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2017.
